Levi looked up from the game that he was testing on his tablet.

Something was wrong.

It was quiet.

There were four adolescent boys in his parents’ house. The only reason it would be quiet, is if said boys were doing something they shouldn’t be.

Levi sighed, and pushed himself up off the couch after a cursory glance around his feet. Such glances had become habit at this point. Max didn’t take well to be stepped on. Levi headed for Matty’s room, as that was usually the epicenter of any mayhem.

Levi approached the door cautiously. It was not out of the realm of possibility that something might explode at him if he just barged in. On not being singed on approach, he put his ear to the door. He heard the muted whispers of Matty, Zac, and Ian. Levi assumed that Max was in there as well, as Max rarely went anywhere outside the apartment alone.

Levi couldn’t make out what they were saying through the door though. Coming to a decision, he took a step back, and knocked on the door. The whisper’s immediately silenced.

“Boys, what are you up to?” Levi asked.

“Nothing!” Three voices rang out simultaneously, and Levi rolled his eyes.

“Because that was convincing. Open up.”

Levi heard footsteps scrambling, and perhaps a minute later the door finally opened. The twins were in full on innocent mode. Levi was fairly certain Matty had taught them that. Their red hair and freckles would have swayed anyone but an older brother.

“Nice try boys.” Levi stepped into the room and glanced around. Matty was at his desk, not even bothering to try and look innocent.

“Alright, what is it?” Levi asked.

“Awesome. That’s what it is.” Matty responded with the confidence of a twelve year old.
“Are we talking exploding awesome, or only minor singing.”

“Nothing’s going to explode.” Matty said.  “... I think.”

Levi walked over with the twins trailing him somewhat sheepishly. Once he was close enough to look over Matty’s shoulder, Levi saw what they had been trying to hide from him. Matty was putting the finishing touches on it, but it was clearly the hoverboard that he had told Max he would try and create for him.
Max himself was sitting on a book cross legged, and watching the board come together.

“I assume that you two are going to test that with something other than your body Max.”

“Uhh...” Matty started.

“We already tested it.” Max stated. His voice was quiet, but Levi could hear it well enough. “It was fine, I landed in the pillows.”

Levi sighed.

“Alright, that should do it.” Matty said. He set the hoverboard down in front of Max. The board itself appeared to be basically an finger skateboard with two large fans on the ends facing down, and two smaller fans on the sides. There were two wires connected to a box on the bottom of the board which appeared to have crude remotes attached to them.

Max hopped down from his book without hesitation, and jumped on board. He picked up the two remotes, which had numerous miniscule buttons on them, and started pushing them like he knew what he was doing.

“I had him help me put the controllers together so that he’d know what does what.” Matty informed Levi while following Max’s startup procedures closely.

Levi nodded, and kept on watching.

“I’m starting it now.” Max said.

“You checked the failsafes?” Matty asked.

“Yup.”

“And the limiters.”

“Yup.”

“What about the backups?”

“There are no backups.” Max responded with a smile.

“Of course not.” Matty said with a smile. “Levi you might want to step back, just in case.”

“Just in case what?”

“Trust me, you really don’t want to get your hair stuck in those fan blades.”

Levi took a small step back, but stayed within arm’s reach of Max just in case.

Max pushed a big red button, because what else would start a hoverboard but a big red button. The fans whirred into action. For a moment the board didn’t move, but then Max pushed the fans a bit. Suddenly Max was hovering about a foot above the desk.

“Awesome.” Matty said. The fans were actually fairly quiet, which was good. Max’s hearing was pretty sensitive. “Now slowly go around the room.”

Max nodded, the concentration obvious on his face. He leaned forward and the hoverboard compensated, and started moving forward. Levi followed slowly behind Max, keeping with in arms reach. He was actually pretty impressed with Matty’s invention though, and didn’t think Max was in any danger.
Without any problems at all, Max did a whole circuit around the room.

“Awesome!” The twins were jumping up and down in excitement. “We want to try!”

“No.” Matty and Levi said at the same time. They threw on their pouty faces, which Matty and Levi ignored.

“Ready for test number two?” Matty asked.

“Ready.” Max said, still hovering about a foot in the air.

“What’s test number two?” Levi asked.

“Speed test.” Matty answered.

“Wha..."

Max shot out of the room before Levi could get a word out.

Levi sighed. “I really should have saw that coming.”
Hoverboard

Matty comes through on his promise to make Max a hoverboard. Just imagine all the randomness that Max can get into now. :)

To be fair, it would be hard to fit backups onto a board that is less than six inches long. :) But yes, they are definitely daredevils. Especially the little one.
