Sage opened his eyes sleepily, and immediately froze. He was in a hand, but it was only holding him loosely. He could hear the human’s heartbeat thumping along slowly and steadily. The air was slowly moving in and out of the lungs beneath him.

Sage slowly slid out of the hand that was tented over him. Once out, he let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding. It was Drew. Sage looked around and saw that they were in Drew’s room, on his bed. He was back. He was safe.

“Hey,” Sage felt the boy shift beneath him a little bit when he spoke, along with the vibrations from his voice. “You’re awake.”

Sage nodded.

“You uh,” Drew started. “You’re not okay are you?”

Sage shook his head.

“Yeah, that makes sense.” Drew reached forward, and Sage couldn’t help but flinch. Drew reached around the borrower with a finger and started rubbing Sage’s back. “You’re so thin.”

“She didn’t feed me for a while.”

“She better hope I never see her again.” Drew said firmly.

“Looks to me like she got the better of you this time.” Sage said, as he nodded at Drew’s arm, which was in its sling.

“I was slightly distracted at the time.” Drew said. He went to pull his finger away, but Sage reached and grabbed it.

“Can you just keep doing that please?” Sage asked.

“Sure.” Drew said with a smile.

“It’s just that I’m kind of cold, and your hands are warm, and,”

“It’s alright.” Drew said. “No need to explain. Here,” Drew wrapped his others fingers around Sage as well. He also brought up his thumb and placed it up against Sage’s stomach and chest. “That better?”
Sage nodded.

There was a knock at the door. Drew instantly moved the hand holding Sage so that he could cover the borrower with the hand of his broken arm.

“Yes?” He called.

“Can I come in?” Drew’s mother asked.

“Can she come in?” Drew asked sage quietly.

“Just don’t let her see me.” Sage said. “I’m not quite ready for that yet.”

“Okay.” Drew responded. “You can come in.”

Drew’s mother walked in and smiled at her son. Sage could just barely see her through a gap in Drew’s fingers.

“How are you holding up?” She asked, as she came in and sat down on the edge of Drew’s bed.

“I’m fine.” Drew said.

“And how about your friend.” Sage froze when the woman glanced at his hiding place in Drew’s hands. Drew gave him the slightest squeeze to reassure him.

“He’s not doing so well.” Drew said honestly. “He said that she hadn’t been feeding him, and he’s super thin. Like the worse kind of thin I’ve ever seen. He’s also practically naked, so he’s really cold.”

“I still can’t believe that family. Would you believe that her parents actually called us and demanded that we give him back?”

Sage’s breath caught in his throat.

“No.” Drew stated firmly.

“Oh don’t worry about that.” Drew’s mother said. “We’re suing them for your medical bills. Buying them out of their own company. And making it quite clear what we think of their daughter.”

“So they can’t get him back?” Drew asked.

“No. The law is on our side, and we have the resources to make it stick. The personal protection order we have against them will make it so that we don’t ever have to deal with them ever again.”

“That’s good.” Drew said.

“But,” Drew’s mother went on. “He really will need to register now. This was too public. The police are saying that he either needs to register, or go into a sanctuary for his own good.”

“I’ll talk to him about it.” Drew promised.

“Good. In the meantime, I’ll get some food ready and work on getting him some clothes.”

“Thanks Mom.” Drew said.

“Thank you!” Sage shouted before he could stop himself.

Drew’s mother jumped a little bit on hearing the little voice come out from her sons’ hands.

“Well you’re both welcome.” She said with a smile. “I do hope that one day you’ll be willing to meet me face to face though.”

Sage hunkered down a bit under Drew’s hand.

“I don’t think we’re quite there yet.” Drew said.

“I understand.” She said. “I’ll be back with that food.”

Drew nodded, and waited until she had left. Then he moved the hand holding Sage out into the open again.

“Well?”

“I’ll register.”

“You sure?” Drew asked.

“I’m sure. I’m mean, if you’re okay with that. I guess I understand if you wouldn’t want to keep me around though. I mean I did get your arm broken.”

“Hey,” Drew said. He brought Sage up so that Sage was looking right into those weird blue-green eyes. “You’re always welcome to stay with me. No matter what.”

“Thanks.” Sage said. The borrower appreciated that Drew didn’t mention the fact that tears were flowing down from him face.

“Is it alright if I stay here in your room tonight?” Sage asked. “If I go back into the walls, I’m not sure I’ll come out again.”

“Of course you can.” Drew responded.

Drew’s mother brought some food in, Sage was hidden again by Drew while she was in the room. After eating, Drew set Sage up with a little bed. It was really just a throw pillow and a t-shirt, but it was infinitely better than what Sage had had to deal with for the last couple weeks.

The pillow and blanket were set up on the nightstand next to Drew’s bed. Sage was pretty much out as soon as Drew put him on the pillow. Because of that, he didn’t notice that even while he was sleeping, Drew kept a hand placed over him.

Just in case.

Aw, how cute! Sage really will be okay now. ^^ Especially since Drew's parents know about him and will look out for him too.

So fluffy! So cute! Sage can count on Drew to take care of him. But the question is will he decide to stay with Drew instead of the sanctuary? hehe

I know you said it wasn't illegal for Sage to be that cute, but what about the two of them? I mean, there's gotta be a law or something.

Just so sweet. =)

It's heartwarming and happy and I'm really sad it's (almost) over. Sage actually asking for help, and for that help to be Drew's hand warming him up, is such nice character development and so fun to read. And Drew's absolute respect for Sage is just as commendable.

Progress is a great thing. I'm certainly glad our boys learned a few things along the way.

I'm not one hundred percent sure where I'm going next. I'm leaning towards the one with Joshua and Adam, but we'll see.
