“No.” Sage said.

“Why not?”

“Because.”

“That’s not a good reason.”

“Is too.”

Drew sighed. He puffed a ball of air at Sage, who had to take a step back in order to not fall onto the table he was standing on.

“You’re being stubborn.” Drew said.

“And you’re being giant.” Sage said with a frown.

Drew smirked. He leaned down and put his chin on his desk. He then laid his arms on the desk too, forming a diamond around Sage.

“I can hardly help that.” Drew said.

“Well, I can’t help being stubborn.” Sage responded. He didn’t seem overly bothered by being surrounded on all sides by Drew.

“I’m pretty sure that’s a bit different.” Drew moved his head forward and poked Sage in the stomach with the tip of his nose. Surprisingly, instead of falling back like Drew expected, Sage planted his hands on the tip of Drew’s nose, and climbed up it.

Drew crossed his eyes trying to follow his progress. Sage reached the bride of Drew’s nose and then turned around. He placed himself into the dent there, and set his feet on the sides of Drew’s nose.

“You have no idea how much I need to sneeze right now.” Drew said.

“You better catch me if you do.” Sage said. “Stand up.”

“With you on my face like that?”

“Yeah.”

“Why?”

“I want to see things the way you do.”

Drew quirked an eyebrow, and Sage shifted a bit so that he didn’t fall off.

“You sure you’re going to be able to stay on like that?”

“As long you don’t sneeze.”

“Alright...” Drew slowly straightened himself out, and stood up. Drew felt Sage grab onto his eyebrows, and pinch his nose between his feet.

“Well, how’s it look?” Drew’s voice sounded weird since his noise was pinched closed.

“Everything looks normal sized from up here.”

Drew smiled a bit, “That’s because everything is normal sized.” Drew could feel every little move that Sage made. So he felt rather than saw Sage shrug. “Do you ever wish you were human sized?” Drew asked.

Sage shrugged again. “Not really.” He said. “I like me the way I am. Me being small is part of who I am.”

Drew walked around his room some to give Sage a good view of it. Eventually though he laid down onto his bed. Sage relaxed against Drew’s face, not holding on as tightly anymore.

“You really do trust me don’t you?” Drew asked.

Sage shrugged again. “You had plenty of chances to catch me, or leave me to die. Why shouldn’t I trust you?”

“Because I’m a whole lot bigger than you are.”

Sage shrugged.

“Then why won’t you trust me when I tell you that registering is the best idea?”

“I don’t know.” Sage said. “It just doesn’t feel right.”

“Why not?”

“Because, borrowers aren’t supposed to intentionally reveal themselves like that.”

“You intentionally revealed yourself to me.”

“I was being chased a snake that was trying to eat me. There was less of a chance of you killing me.”

“Fair enough.” Drew said. The boy frowned. “So is it being known about that bothers you, or being seen that bothers you?”

“What’s the difference?”

“I don’t know, I’m just asking.”

“Well, I guess being seen bothers me more. I don’t like being known about, but it sounds like everyone already knows about borrowers already anyways. So that’s not that big of a deal.”

“What about my parents? Can they know about you?”

“Not yet.” Sage said. “Let me think about things a bit more.”

“Alright, well I’m going to take a nap before I do my homework.”

“Okay.”

Drew reached up and lightly pinched Sage’s waist between his finger and thumb. He picked him up off his nose and stood up. “Hey! I still need those fishhooks.”

Drew smiled. “Alright, alright.”

------------------------------------------------------------

Sage rubbed his arms, trying to warm them up. It was getting cold outside. His home under the bathroom was warm enough thanks to the hot water pipes, but the same couldn’t be said of the space in the walls. Sage had started working on some warmer clothes, but he hadn’t made much progress. Unfortunately, that meant he was stuck wearing his shorts and t-shirt. He didn’t even have any shoes and socks.

He ended spending a lot of time with Drew because of this. Which wasn’t a bad thing, except that it took Sage quite a while to get from his place to Drew’s room. He usually jogged it in order to keep himself as warm as possible. That only worked so much though, and today was particularly cold.

Sage shoved open the door to Drew’s room. He walked out on the shelf and looked around, slightly confused. Usually this time of day Drew was in his room. The room looked empty though. The door was closed, and Sage knew Drew was the only one home.

Sage walked up to the edge of the shelf and looked down.

“What are you doing down there?” He asked.

Drew was sprawled out on his stomach on the ground. The human rolled over and looked up.

“Well since you already saw things from my perspective, I figured it’s about time I should try and see things from yours.”

Sage rolled his eyes. He looked down, and made sure his landing pad was there. Drew had set up a pillow under the shelf so that Sage had a quick way down if necessary. It was plenty thick and soft enough to cushion the fall.

Sage easily stepped off. The borrower landed on the pillow without any issue. He slid himself off the pillow, and started walking towards Drew. He made a conscious effort to stop shivering. He would be fine after a while now that he was outside the walls.

Drew turned himself around so that he was facing Sage.

“Are you cold?” He asked.

Sage sighed. Apparently he hadn’t been doing a very good job of hiding his shaking.

“I’ll be fine.” Sage replied.

“Uh huh.” Drew obviously didn’t believe him.

“The heat doesn’t really reach inside the walls.” Sage said as he continued his trek over to Drew. Drew had his chin on the ground, which did actually put his eyes about Drew’s head level. “That can’t be comfortable.”

Drew shrugged. Drew’s arm shot out, and he placed his hand palm down right in front of Sage. Sage stopped quickly, but not quickly enough to stop himself from tumbling over onto the back of Drew’s hand.

“What was that for?” Sage asked. He was now lying on the back of his friend’s hand just like Drew was lying on the ground.

“Testing your reflexes.” Drew said. “You’re a bit sluggish.”

Sage rolled his eyes, but stayed laying on Drew’s hand. The human’s body heat was seeping up into Sage’s body, and he was already shivering less.

“You’re a very annoying human.”

“And you’re a very cold borrower.” Drew brought his other hand over and laid it on top of Sage.
“Hey!” Sage pushed himself up against the palm of Drew’s top hand. Sage knew that the only reason Drew’s hand went up was because Drew was lifting it. Sage wasn’t nearly strong enough to actually lift Drew’s hand, even if Drew hadn’t been trying to hold him down with it.

“What?” Drew asked.

“What do you mean what?” Sage asked. “You ever hear of personal space?”

“Considering that I’m the one that told you about that. Yes, yes I have.”

Sage rolled his eyes again. He was feeling much warmer now.

“Your hands are getting clammy.”

Now it was Drew’s turn to roll his eyes. He lifted his top hand all the way off Sage though. Sage got up, and walked up Drew’s arm. Sage could practically feel Drew’s eyes on him.

“Hey, I thought you were trying to see things from my perspective.” Sage said.

“I am, I’m just watching you from your perspective.”

Sage sighed, and kept on walking. He eventually reached Drew’s shoulder. Instead of staying there, he continued on, and started walking down Drew’s back.

“Dude,” Drew tried to look over his shoulder to see Sage. Sage crouched down, and grabbed onto Drew’s shirt. “Sorry.” Drew settled back down. “But I can barely feel you back there.”

“I know.” Sage said. “That’s one of the important things about being my size.” Sage jumped up and down. “We can fight and push and jump and punch with literally everything we’ve got, and you’d barely notice.”

“That’s so weird.” Drew said.

“Only because you have no idea what it’s like.” Sage called over Drew’s shoulder. “If you knew what it’s like, you’d know that it’s terrifying.”

“You think everything is terrifying.”

“That’s because everything is terrifying.”

“Even me?” Drew asked.

Sage sighed. He walked back over to Drew’s shoulder. He hopped down and walked over so that he was standing in front of Drew’s face.

“You want the truth?” Sage asked. “Or do you want me say what you want to hear?”

“The truth.” Drew said. The boy’s breath washed over Sage. Sage could tell that he had had something with syrup for breakfast.

“Then yes. You are terrifying.” Sage said. He watched as Drew’s face fell, and continued. “You have to be. If I let myself stop being afraid of you, then I’ll drop my guard around you. And if I do that, it only takes one little miss-step and I end up squished.”

“I wouldn’t step on you.” Drew said.

“Says the person who brought me to school with him because he thought I was an action figure.”
“Mornings don’t count.”

Sage sighed. “You don’t get it.”

“No,” Drew said. “I get what you’re saying. It just doesn’t seem like a fun life.”

“A borrower’s life isn’t about fun.”

“Then what is a borrower’s life about?”

“Surviving.”

“It doesn’t have to be.” Drew said quietly. “I can help you. You know that.”

“I don’t need others to help me.”

“I know that.” Drew said. “But I also know that if you rely on others, even just a little bit, your life gets a lot better.”

Sage shrugged. He didn’t want to admit, at least not out loud, but he knew that Drew was right. Sage’s life had gotten loads better just from little things that Drew had done to help. He also knew that Drew was a lot happier now that Sage was around.

“Well,” Drew said when Sage didn’t respond. “My neck hurts. Let’s go watch some TV or something.”

“Alright.” Sage said. Sage walked back around Drew’s head. He used Drew’s ear to climb up onto Drew’s head. He got himself settled, and patted Drew’s head.

As Drew carefully got up, Sage made sure to keep a hold on Drew’s hair. Thankfully Drew was good about keeping himself clean. Sage would have to think more about what Drew had said.

Well, I suppose it is a bit unique to have a friend who's your same age, but 18 times smaller or larger than you. ;)

Now excuse me while I go on a search to find a TARDIS, or a DeLorean, or a time machine in general so I can skip to Monday.

I could never step off a cupboard if it was that high up! Ugh! No thank you! Even if I knew there was a pillow to soften my fall. I love when tines sit on giant's heads but I can't help but think how gross it would be if they had lice or something like that. Yuck!yuck

Yeah, if Drew didn't wash his hair, Sage just wouldn't sit there. And he really doesn't have a highly developed fear of heights. Or falling. ;)

Yeah, probably a good idea;) That's lucky, I'm pretty sure that you can't be afraid of heights if you're a borrower.
